DUBUQUE — A former UW-Platteville professor arrested in a prostitution sting operation received deferred judgment in Iowa District Court of Dubuque County.
Craig A. Mason, 57, Stoughton, pleaded guilty to a prostitution charge and was sentenced to two years of informal probation with a $3,500 fine, including a $1,000 human trafficking surcharge. In deferred judgments, if the defendant meets probation and payment obligations the charge will be expunged.
Mason was associate director of bands and director of the orchestra at UW-Platteville.
Mason was one of 11 men, two others of whom are from Wisconsin, arrested in the sting operation Feb. 8-9 by Dubuque police, the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa State Patrol through posting ads on “websites often utilized for prostitution,” according to a police news release. Those charged responded to the ads and arranged a meeting with undercover officers to purchase “sex acts in exchange for money” at the Mainstay Suites in Dubuque.
Timothy A. Griffin, 32, Dickeyville, was charged with prostitution, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Kevin Stanton, 63, Cuba City, was also charged with prostitution.
