MONROE — A Freeport man was trying to pass another car on a two-lane highway when Stephenson County authorities say the 62-year-old died after his car rolled and crashed late Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release, deputies were called just before 4:45 p.m. to the two-lane Baileyville Road, about a mile north of Lamm Road in Freeport. 

An initial preliminary investigation showed that a car driven by the man was northbound when the driver apparently lost control while trying to pass another car, officials said.

 At some point, the vehicle spun, and went into a ditch on the east side of the road. Once in the ditch, the vehicle hit a driveway and rolled several times before stopping in the yard of a residence, officials said. The cause of the crash remains investigation. 

The victim’s name had not been released as of the newspaper’s Monday deadline.
