MADISON - A Monroe man who allegedly threatened to kill a DeForest police officer was indicted Wednesday in federal court here for possessing a firearm and ammunition while subject to a restraining order.

According to an affidavit by an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent filed in court in Madison: John R. Karls, 46, was issued a restraining order issued in a Dane County domestic abuse case that expired in December, 2011 which prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

On Feb. 15, a male DeForest police officer contacted Madison police informing them he had received four emails from johnkarls@charter.net on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10.

In one email, Karls threatened to kill him. In another email Karls stated "maybe I'll take my 357 and blow your (expletive) head off."

The ATF agent, along with Monroe, Madison and DeForest police executed a search warrant at Karl's 9th St. residence and recovered a .357 caliber handgun and about 200 rounds of ammunition. Also recovered was a box and a packing slip dated Oct. 8, 2008 and addressed to Karls for the purchase of a .357 handgun and 200 rounds of ammunition. According to online court records, Karls lived in DeForest before moving to Monroe.

Federal law prohibits persons subject to a domestic restraining order from possessing a firearm. If convicted, Karls faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

No court dates have been set in the case.

Meanwhile, Karls also faces felony drug charges in Green County.

When local police helped search Karls' home on the DeForest stalking case, they discovered evidence that Karls was allegedly growing hallucenogenic mushrooms.
