MONROE - If you've been down 8th Street this week you'll notice the roadway looks much different than it did just a couple weeks ago; there has been a lot of work done this past week.
Concrete crews have poured sidewalk and driveways along the north side of 8th Street, added decorative concrete in the medians and at the intersections, and filled in missing curb and gutter. Asphalt crews successfully completed all the mainline paving along 8th Street and 6th Avenue West while also filling in driveway and parking lot pavement. Sanitary sewer services from 3rd Avenue to Wis. 69 were lined during nighttime operations, and the large culvert under Ruda Chevrolet/Toyota got a new structural liner. Roadway crews placed additional topsoil and lighting contractors installed decorative light poles and traffic signals at the four main intersections.
Over the next two weeks, construction will continue throughout the corridor as contractors work to finish the project.
Concrete crews will finish all remaining concrete items while road crews finish stripping the newly paved asphalt. Electrical crews will finish installing traffic signals and turn on the decorative street lights along 8th Street. Storm crews will finish the remaining storm sewer improvements, and additional topsoil will be placed while areas are seeded, fertilized, and covered with landscape fabric that will reduce erosion and aid seed germination.
There will be various lane closures throughout the week as crews complete these last items. The roadway will remain open and businesses will be easier to access.
We want to thank the people of Monroe and the many businesses located along the roadway for their support and patience this past week as we closed roadways and intersections. We understand this was an inconvenience as well as confusing at times. The closures increased safety and accelerated the construction timeline, reducing the impact to the businesses.
