MONTICELLO - Monticello is gearing up for a $1.5 million street reconstruction project, which is expected in early April.
Joel P. Dutenhoefer, village clerk and treasurer, said the original water main and sewer main is still in service. Some of the water main on North Main Street dates back to 1911.
"The village is pumping more water than it uses," Dutenhoefer said.
The project will impact North Main Street and South Monroe Street. A majority of Monticello's businesses are located on North Main Street.
The project includes replacement or upgrading water mains and sanitary sewer main laterals, the installation of a storm sewers and two fire hydrants.
Requests for bids for the project are expected to go out in late February. The village is seeking a completion date of Oct. 31.
North Main Street is expected to take about 12 weeks to complete. The village wants that portion of the project finished in time for Monticello's homecoming activities, July 9-11.
During construction, businesses may need to find alternative entrances.
Removed sidewalk sections will be overlaid with gravel to maintain pedestrian access, but newly poured sections require a cure time of at least three days.
South Monroe Street construction will take about 16 weeks, with a suggested start date of late May or early June.
Construction will occasionally disrupt traffic flow, parking, and water service. Notice of any water being shut off will be made three days in advance.
Monticello will be bonding for the project through the Build America Bonds program.
Build America Bonds program, created in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009, gives tax credits and federal subsidies to reduce the cost of borrowing for state and local governments.
Property owners will be assessed for sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
Water and sanitary sewer main replacements will be paid through the utility.
