MONROE - Six Concerts on the Square will be performed in Monroe this summer on the second and fourth Thursdays in June and July, and the first and third Thursdays in August. The free concerts, which feature professional bands and a variety of music, are sponsored by Monroe Main Street and underwritten by numerous area businesses.
The concerts will be held on the Square despite the ongoing streetscape renovation project this summer, according to concert committee chairman Karen Stollenwerk. Since the construction project will proceed in one area at a time, the traffic flow around the Square will remain open and audiences should have no trouble parking. Those attending should bring their own lawn chairs.
Box lunches will be available at Café Claudeen's, Turner Hall and the Garden Deli. Chocolate Temptation and Ruf's Confectionery also will be open during the concerts. All are located on or near the Square.
The concerts run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will be held rain or shine, Stollenwerk said. Alternative indoor sites include either Turner Hall or the Monroe Middle School, both located just two blocks off the Square. In the event of inclement weather, signs will be posted on the Square directing people to either the Turner Hall or Monroe Middle School site.
Concerts include: June 11, Horsefeathers; June 25, Red Hot Dixie; July 9, Stranded in Iowa; July 23, The Jimmys; Aug. 6, Saxtet Plus; and, Aug. 20, Jefferson County Bluegrass Band.
Information is available by calling Monroe Main Street at 328-4023 or e-mailing monroemainstreet@tds.net.
