MONROE - The City of Monroe Finance and Taxation Committee members voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend giving an additional $10,000 to the Chamber of Commerce to be used for economic development expenses.

The council is expected to vote on the issue Jan. 15.

Chamber Director Pam Christopher told the committee the extra money would go toward marketing the city and would pay for more economic development meetings and conventions, dues and office and stationary expenses.

The committee agreed to pay the funds to the chamber in one lump sum and requested from the chamber periodic update reports on how the money is being used.

The city contracts with the chamber for economic development services at $35,000 per year. The cost for those services was originally intended to help cover salaries, but Christopher said the money actually goes back into the Chamber general funds to support economic development programs and expenses.
