MONROE - The Monroe Art Center Frehner Gallery will present "Color and Water: Variations by artist Karolyn Alexander" June 3 through June 26. From landscapes to florals, still lifes to abstracts, the Whitewater artist covers all subjects through vibrant watercolor paintings.

Experimenting with a variety of watercolor papers, crayons, and pencils, Alexander said she delights in taking a playful approach to using traditional materials in a non-traditional way. She expresses her excitement for a subject and will give up a realistic rendering in favor of more vibrant color, loose interpretive brush strokes or a more interesting design.

She often starts her paintings without any type of reference, drawing upon a memory or an emotion from within.

"I have developed a passion for painting with watercolors. I love to watch the color move and mix on the paper in a wet into wet application, along with the versatility, variety of styles, and techniques that can be used. I love the challenge, and, yes, I even love the problem-solving that is sometimes required to bring a painting to completion," Alexander said.

After postponing an art career for her family, Alexander was reintroduced to watercolor in 2003 upon taking an early retirement from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She is an associate member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and a member of the Janesville Art League, Whitewater Arts Alliance, Door County Art League, Wisconsin Regional Artists, Wisconsin Artists and Craftspeople, and many other arts-related organizations. She exhibits regularly at galleries throughout the Janesville, Whitewater, and Door County areas.

An opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3 in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery. Alexander will give a short gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. This informal event is free and open to the public and is for art lovers of all levels.
