MONROE - The Monroe Youth in Government program is currently seeking nominations for youth to apply for youth seats on City of Monroe committees. Eligible youth must be currently in ninth, 10th, or 11th grade and either be a Monroe resident or part of the Monroe School District.

The Monroe Youth in Government program will give youth a forum to ask questions, speak their minds on community issues and influence local decisions. The program is designed to empower youth voices while developing confident, independent and motivated youth leaders.

Nomination forms are available online at the Green County University of Wisconsin-Extension website at green.uwex.edu. Any adult may nominate a student for the program. Students also may self-nominate. Completed nomination forms must be submitted to the Green County UW-Extension office by 4:30 p.m. Feb. 17.

Once nominated, the youth will be sent an invitation to apply for the program. Those who apply will go through an interview process. Selected participants will be notified by late spring and will start their terms with the city in the fall of 2017. Prior to taking the oath of office, the youth will be required to participate in a brief orientation program that will familiarize them with city government and the roles and responsibilities that committee members have.

The program, the third of its kind in the state, is a partnership between the city, school district and UW-Extension. For more information, contact Victoria Solomon at the Green County UW-Extension office at 608-328-9440 or Victoria.Solomon@ces.uwex.edu.
