MONROE - A creative lifeguard staff at Monroe's municipal swimming pool turned learning into fun videos last summer, and their efforts will help make the pool more accessible.

Cities and Villages Mutual Insurance Company (CVMIC) has awarded Monroe a Significant Program Award for a series of 10 safety videos produced by the lifeguard staff.

Carol Stamm, city clerk, and Marge Klinzing, recreation supervisor, presented the award from CVMIC Tuesday at the city council meeting.

Klinzing said the videos have become part of in-service training for lifeguards, and a couple are used to teach children about pool safety.

"The videos are a fun way to learn about some things that aren't always exciting to learn," she said.

The videos will receive a Silver Star Award from the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association this fall, according to Klinzing.

In The Monroe Municipal Fairy Tales, the Three Little Pigs learn about sun safety; Snow White and Seven Dwarfs take on blood-borne pathogens; and Prince Frog and Little Red Riding Hood deal with heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

The video series starred the life guards and was directed by Abby Hlubek and Brianna Zimmerman. Hlubek edited the films.

With the award, the city received $1,000, which the Parks and Recreation Department will use to upgrade accessibility for the pool.

Because of its size, the city swimming pool must have two means of access into the pool under new ADA requirements for 2011, said Parks Supervisor Paul Klinzing. The pool will get a handicap chair lift and a ramp.

Eight of the videos, titled Pool Fairy Tales, are available on YouTube.
