City plans day of events to mark July 4th

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation 4th of July Celebration will be an all-day event on Saturday, July 4, at Twining Park.

The City of Monroe fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. and end with a spectacular 2009 "Salute to America" Sky Concert.

Come early and stake out a piece of ground to watch the show. To ensure the safety of the people in the park and to avoid distraction during the display, vehicles will not be able to drive through the park during the fireworks.

All-day Coed Volleyball and Slowpitch tournaments will be held at the park.

The Monroe Parks & Recreation Midget League and the Teenie Tiny Girls Softball Leagues will play ball at the Twining West and East Ball Diamonds.

The Park & Recreation 4x4 soccer tournament is open to Kindergarteners-Adults and is held at the Green County YMCA soccer fields. They will play round robin with each team guaranteed to play 3 games against teams in their division. Everyone playing will receive medals including 1st & 2nd place and participation medals. Adult teams will receive key chains. All the games will be refed. In case of rain, as many games as possible will be played. If the tournament is canceled because of rain, the player fee will not be refunded. Each player will receive a team T-shirt. Openings remain - please call the office at 329-2460 as soon as possible.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the park, children will have fun playing Go Fish, Wild, Wild West, Lets' Go Fishing under the sea with Sponge Bob, Touchdown Pass, Pretty Princess, Candy Land Shop, I Wanna Be a Rock Star! - Face Painting and Tattoos, Wheel of Misfortune, Dora's Pick-a-Sucker, Ninja Turtle Power, Patriotic Pitch, Pirates of Caribbean Kerplunk, Moon Walk, Leaping for Loot, Pick-a-Duck, and Hole in One.

Dunk Tank begins at 11 a.m.Tot Lot singers will perform at the bandshell at 10:15 a.m. The City Band Concert begins at 8 p.m.

Take a horse and wagon ride around the park with driver Clinton Zettle from 1-4 p.m.

Concessions stands will be located in the park. Choose from the lemonade, nachos & Schwan's ice cream products from the South Shelter and Vince's Pizza near the Bandshell. Koning's Ribeye Grill will be selling coffee, roast beef sandwiches, ribeye sandwiches, barbecue pork sandwiches, butterfly pork chop sandwiches and potato salad near the Bruni Shelter. Knights of Columbus will have stands throughout the park selling popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, brats, bottled water, snow-cones and more. If anyone is interested in donating items including water, soda, Tostitos, frozen lemonade and cheddar cheese sauce, please call the Monroe Parks & Recreation Department at 329-2460.

The Monroe Park & Rec. Department is looking for volunteers to work the concession stand and carnival games; over 300 volunteers are needed to work on the 4th. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Carol Wyss of the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department at 329-2466. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt for helping.

Proceeds from the 4th of July celebration go toward Twining Park improvements.
