City officials lower speed limit for stretch of Wis. 69

MONROE - On Monday, city officials dropped the speed requirement for a portion of Wisconsin 69 from 35 miles per hour to 25 due to construction on 8th Street.

Construction along the street from Wis. 69 to 6th Avenue West began in late March. Work should be completed in October.

Signs are in place, Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said at the Public Safety Committee meeting held before common council proceedings.

Director of Public Works Al Gerber said the goal is to slow down traffic, which generally exceeds the posted 35 mph limit for the road. Given the extra cones and workers, if cars decelerate, the area will be safer, he said.

"It's just to kind of get people to slow up a bit," Gerber said. "We're reducing the speed through that corridor from Pizza Hut to basically over to the city streets garage."

The change comes on the heels of a recent traffic accident at the intersection of Wis. 69 and 8th Street. On April 11, a three-vehicle collision occurred, leaving one driver injured.

Despite the hope of slowing down vehicles, council member Chris Beer said she has noticed no changes on the road she drives daily.

"I would like to see at least some enforcement through there," Beer said. "They're not even trying to slow down."

Kelley added that an electronic speed control sign will be set up and police officers will drive through to monitor traffic as much as possible. At the council meeting, alderman Charles Koch echoed Beer's statement.

"I hope they obey it once we pass this," Koch said.
