MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is offering a fall terrace tree planting program. Monroe residents who would like a tree to be planted on their terrace should go to the Park and Rec department to pick out a tree and pick up a flag. Flyers listing the trees are available.
Tree orders for the fall planting are due Oct. 7. Red flags must be placed by Oct. 10 indicating where on the terrace the tree is to be planted. Planting will begin the week of Oct. 24.
Trees available for the fall planting are American Sentry Linden, $65; Regal Prince Oak, $130; and Kentucky Coffee Tree, $145. The low-growing tree available this year is the Ivory Silk Lilac, $55.
The price of the tree includes the Park Department planting, staking, mulching, fertilizing and watering the tree at the time of planting.
The homeowner also is given information from the nursery on care after planting. The trees are guaranteed for one year and will be replaced at no cost. These trees are only for city residents and can only be planted on the terrace.
Several items to consider when ordering a terrace tree: If overhead utility lines are over the terrace, only a low- growing tree may be planted.
On corner lots at street intersections, no tree shall be planted in the triangle formed by measuring 30 feet from the intersection of the curb lines of each adjacent street.
Spacing between new trees should be a minimum of 25 feet. The terrace width should be a minimum of 41â"2 feet. No tree can be planted within 25 feet of a fire hydrant. No tree can be planted closer than 10 feet from a water stop box.
There will be a spring 2017 terrace tree planting program also.
As of Monday, the Park and Recreation Department has moved temporarily to the Street Department office, 1064 5th Ave., Monroe, while work on City Hall continues. For more information, call Park and Rec at 608-329-2460.
