MONROE - In a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee:

• Dismissed a request to place utility shed in Market on the Square area, north side of Square. The shed will be on county property, so the city had no action to take.

• Discussed proposed bicycle routes from Twining Park to the downtown Square, presented by Ryan Wilson from Monroe Main Street Design Committee.

• Discussed study on handicapped parking and crosswalks downtown, and approved moving two handicapped spaces from the center of the block to the ends. Requested that two other handicapped spaces and mid-block crosswalks be researched for safety and state law before the next meeting, when the committee will discuss removing crosswalk status to make room for more parking spaces.

• Discussed and voted 2-1 to maintain a 2008 directive for police services to be billed back for special events that require extra police services.

• Discuss and recommended to council to approve special events for Main Street Concert on the Square; Monroe Balloon Rally; George Carden Shrine Circus; and Independence Day Celebration.
