MONROE - In a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee:
Discussed the width of downtown Square driving lanes and sent the issue to Monroe Main Street for its consideration regarding adequate room for fire protection. Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said he measured widths between 12 and 14 feet; state codes require 20 feet wide fire lanes. City Engineer Supervisor said the lanes are about 1.5 feet narrower than before the reconstruction due to the increased size of the median. Driving lanes require a minimum of 12 feet, he added.
Discussed parking spaces next to fire hydrants. Police Chief Fred Kelley said state codes require vehicles be parked not less than 10 feet from a hydrant. Four spaces mid-block on the Square do not meet state code. The Committee directed Kelley and Street Department Supervisor Tom Boll to eliminate the vehicle parking spaces and to determine if bicycle parking would be possible in the spaces.
Discussed and directed Kelley and Boll to erect pedestrian crossing signs at 12th Avenue and 9th Street.
Discussed and passed a motion to increase Police Department fees for storage in impoundment lot from $3 to $20. Kelley said the fee had remained the same for 30 years.

Approved for payment of bills in the amounts of $236 and $417 from Fehr-Graham & Associates for Walmart utility inspection; $2,383.62 from Green Valley Disposal for December recycling; and $4,623.29 from Gentz Electric for downtown street lights work.
