MONROE - On Tuesday, May 20, the Monroe City Council:

• Set a public hearing date for June 17 for the ordinance rezoning property No. 131 from R-2 (medium residential) to B-2 (general business).

• Accepted a donation of furniture for the senior center building.

• Authorized the hiring of Jacob A. Towns as a replacement, entry-level police officer effective June 5, at an hourly wage of $19.83.

• Approved payment of claims in the amount of $256,456.60.

• Approved special events for Swiss Colony's Monroe Badger Days on June 16, and Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry Monroe Balloon Rally, Pork Producers Dinner and Taste of Monroe from 5 p.m. June 11 until 2 p.m. June 15.

• Granted operator's license to Tiffany D. Wiser-Bell.

• Approved the Wastewater Treatment Facility 2007 Compliance Maintenance Annual Report.

Alderman Mark Coplien was absent.

MONROE - The Salary and Personnel Committee on Tuesday night approved the hiring of two seasonal employees for the Street Department.

• The Finance and Taxation Committee Tuesday night postponed a discussion regarding the purchase of an e-mail archiving server in conjunction with Green County. Mayor Ron Marsh told the committee that further options were being considered.

• The Public Property Committee met in closed session Tuesday night to discuss terms for negotiation the sale of land to an adjoining property owner by Willow Way pond.
