MONROE - Nate Klassy, Chairman of the Green County Solid Waste Management Board, presented the city with a check for $23,384.93 at the Board of Public Works meeting Monday night.

The money is a refund from 2007 landfill charges.

After the Green County landfill books for 2007 were closed, the Department of Natural Resources authorized the release of Long Term Care Trust funds.

The Solid Waste Management Board voted to refund $41,084.59 to the municipalities based on percent of landfill use.

Klassy said the management board has over $1 million in the trust fund and is still making money. Much of it is invested in Monroe he said.

Fifty-six percent of the solid waste coming into the landfill is from Monroe.

That high percentage of support is one of the reasons other municipalities in the county have an interest in Monroe remaining a part of those signing contracts for another five years, with a five-year extension.

"The rest will get on board" said Klassy, if Monroe will approve entering into another contract.

Monroe's last contract was for 10 years, which ended in 2007.

The Board of Public Works votedunanimously to recommend to City Council approval of the new contract.

The board also voted to look into the feasibility of a computer recycling program.

The program would recycle computers, monitors, ink jet and laser jet printers. The program would be free and run by Asset Recyclers. Details about storage and pickup would be worked out with the company.
