City of Monroe announces special days for trash pickup

MONROE - The City of Monroe Street and Sanitation Department has announced upcoming special days for various trash disposal.

• Tire Day: April 24, 7 a.m. to noon at the Street Department. The cost is $1.75 per passenger vehicle tire, $7 per tire 16 inches and larger, and $10 per tractor tire.

• Freon item pick up: April 19 - May 14. Items requiring a freon sticker (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, and dehumidifiers) will be picked up curbside at the reduced cost of $15 per sticker. Stickers must be purchased at City Hall or the Street Department Administration Building. Items are picked up the rest of the year on an individual basis at a higher cost.

• E-Waste Recycling: This is an on-going program throughout the year. Electronic equipment will be accepted at a cost of $.35 per pound; common batteries will cost $2.50 per pound. Items must be dropped off at City Hall or the Street Department Administration Building.

• Free Yard Waste drop off: From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays on these dates: April 28, May 5, May 26, June 9, June 30, July 7, July 28, Aug. 11, Aug. 25, Sept. 8, Sept. 29, Oct. 6 and 27. Also from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturdays on these dates: April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16.

• Mulch: Free mulch is available at Twining Park in the band shell parking lot. Deliveries of 5-yard loads are available for $35. Mulch for city residents only. Call 329-2490 for information.

• Bulky Waste: Bulky waste is a term used to designate any solid waste that cannot be effectively collected and transported, due to its composition, weight, or bulk. This includes furniture, appliances, toilets, carpeting, swing sets, etc. These items can be picked up at any time of the year by:

1) Filing a form at City Hall or Street Department explaining what the item is and when it will be placed on the curb for collection. The collection date is usually on the regular Garbage/Recycle collection date.

2) Purchasing a bulky waste sticker and affixing it to the item for pickup. The cost of the sticker varies according to the item: refrigerators or freezers, $50 each; tires, $5; air conditioning unit, $40 each; Dehumidifiers: $35 each; Washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters and dishwashers: $20 each; Household furniture and fixtures, including carpet, toilets, sinks: $10; Swing sets, poles: $20
