City has trees available for terrace planting

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has trees available for the Fall Terrace Tree Planting program. All orders must be placed with the Park and Recreation Department by Friday, Oct. 8 and planting will begin the week of Oct. 25. The following is a list of trees available for the fall planting season:

• Deborah Maple trees have brilliant red foliage in spring, becoming dark bronze-green in summer. This tree grows to approximately 40 to 60 feet and is priced at $49.

• Emerald Lustre Maple is similar to the Emerald Queen, but more vigorous and a better branching habit. It has glossy, green foliage with red tips on new growth and a yellow fall color. These trees grow to be 50 to 60 and are priced at $49.

• Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac is a budded tree form with a sturdy and compact habit. This selection will flower at an early age. White flower plumes 10 to 12 inches long. They must have a well-drained site and no high nitrogen fertilizer. These trees grow to be 15 to 25 feet and are priced at $49.

The trees listed above are for terrace planting only. Trees purchased through this program will be planted by the Monroe Parks Department who will stake the desired location and contact Digger's Hotline prior to planting. At the time of planting, the parks will mulch, water, fertilize and stake the tree and leave care instructions with the homeowner. The trees are guaranteed for one year.

People interested in purchasing one or more trees may contact the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department at 329-2460 to place an order. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is voice mail for after hour-service. Residents will receive a flag to be staked in the area where they want the tree planted when they pay for the tree.

Trees available for spring terrace planting include: Sienna Maple, Emerald Lustre Maple, Skyline Honey Locust, White Oak, Burgundy Belle, Cleveland Select Pear, Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac and Satisfaction Maple. These trees will be planted late April.
