MONROE - The City of Monroe Board of Public Works approved extending the Lakeside Heights project Monday to include an additional 40 feet along Country Lane to control erosion.

The extension will add about $6,400 to the $1.2 million project to improve water, wastewater and streets in the Lakeside Heights area around Lake Drive, southeast of Recreation Park. Project construction costs are estimates by Town & Country Engineering, Inc., Madison, engineers for the project.

George Thompson, the city's water and wastewater utilities director, requested the change orders for contractors, following a walk-through of the project area Thursday, April 12. The project originally included the east-west portion of Country Lane, but Thompson wants to extend the project further north on the street.

"It was clear there was an erosion problem around the corner (on Country Lane)," which could be alleviated by adding curb and gutter, he said.

The additional work adds about $940 to the water utility costs and about $2,300 to the wastewater utility costs, which will be paid from the utilities' funds. About $3,100 of the costs will be paid through the city's street department 2012 budget. Sidewalks are not part of the project.

The council approved hiring contractors for the project in March. Iverson Construction, LLC, of Cottage Grove, will reconstruct underground pipelines for $588,900. E & N Hughes Company, Inc., of Monroe, will reconstruct the sewage pumping station for $265,800 and the street for $338,300.

Construction is estimated to last about four months.
