MONROE - Among the unique souvenirs for the 2014 Cheese Days festival are cast iron slices of Swiss cheese, artfully crafted and donated by Grede Holdings LLC of Browntown.

The concept, based on an actual slice from a wheel of Swiss, was developed by company engineer Tom Miller. Following approval by general manager Dan Verschage, the slices were created with cooperation from various departments at the foundry, including tooling, pattern making, melting, molding and grinding.

Weighing in at more than 1 1/2 pounds, the slices are made from the same cast grey iron that Grede uses for everything from fly wheel housings to break drums. Slices are available in a clear coat finish and also a shade of gold; painting courtesy of Murray and Sons, Browntown.

Grede's cast iron cheese slices can be purchased at the Cheese Days Store, located in the lower level of the Historic Green County Courthouse. The store is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and, beginning in August, will also be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.
