MONROE - Margaret Parmer's Manna Bread took the grand prize in the Cheese and Beer Bread Recipe Contest, held during Green County Cheese Days.

Her recipe featured Lazy Mutt beer from Minhas Craft Brewery and Cheddar Cheese from Deppeler Cheese Factory.

Nine finalists competed in the event, and all recipes included local cheese from one of the 13 Green County cheese factories - and beer from either Minhas Craft Brewery or New Glarus Brewing Company.

First runner-up went to Bev Hoesly's Fall Harvest Bread made with Stone Soup Beer from New Glarus Brewing Company and White Cheddar Cranberry Cheese from Maple Leaf Cheese Cooperative. The third runner-up was Lazy Mutt Cheesy Bread Pudding by Joseph Stapf, with Lazy Mutt beer and Grand Cru Gruyere, from Emmi-Roth Kase USA.

Winners received cash prizes from Green County Cheese Days, and special prizes from contest sponsors, including Minhas Craft Brewery, New Glarus Brewing Company, The Swiss Colony, and Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

All finalists also received gift bags from the sponsors.

Event judges included Chef Mike Nevil of Chalet Landhaus, Emmy Fink from Madison's CW Television, Kay and Terry Argue (Terry was won the contest in 2006), Cheese Days Ambassador Trisha Pernot, Green County Dairy Queen Lauren Christen; and Green County Dairy Princess Katie Burke.
