Cheese Days Children's Sandwich Contest contenders

MONROE - The Children's Sandwich Contest will take place at noon on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Cheese Days hospitality tent during Green County Cheese Days.

Children were asked to create a unique sandwich combination using local cheeses for judging. There are 12 finalists in the contest with three age groups being judged - ages 6 and under, ages 7 through 9 and ages 10 through 12.

Here are a few examples of sandwiches that will be displayed at the children's sandwich contest:

• Mommy Salami Mozzi Moo: Alp and Dell String Cheese and Mozzarella and Maple Leaf Blueberry White Cheddar served with hard salami and carrots with Miracle Whip and All Americans Sandwich Spread on a dinner roll. (The cheese slices are cut into the word "MOO"). Made by Tre Dammen, age 4.

• The Awesome with a side of Super Tasty: Two waffles with three types of cheese: Silver and Lewis Muenster, Chalet Cheese Brick and Maple Leaf Colby, and for the sweet tooth, a splash of syrup. Made by Jozelyn Miller, age 7.

• The Fiesta: A large tortilla wrap spread with fresh avocado smothered with black olives, jalapeños, tomatoes, lettuce, Sweet N Hot Pepper Farmer cheese (Decatur Dairy) and Monterey Jack with jalapeños (Maple Leaf) served with salsa and sour cream. Made by Cierra Larson, age 11.

The judges are: Melody Leoffleholz, Monroe High School family and consumer science teacher and department head; Corie Grossen, 2008 Cheese Days Queen; Lois Kaster, 2012 Cheese Days Parade Marshal and 1988 Cheese Days Queen; and Nancy Faith, representing Swiss Colony, 2004 Cheese Days Queen, 1992 Cheese Days Parade Marshal and Cheese Days Co-Chairman from 1988 through 1990.
