MONROE - Green County cheeses brought in $20,930 for 489 pounds of cheese - an average of $42.80 per pound - Sunday at the 2012 Green County Fair Blue Ribbon Cheese Auction, sponsored by the Foreign Type Cheesemakers Association.
Bidding totaled $25,000 for 400 pounds of cheese in 2011. The auction raised about $34,000 in 2010, when five pounds of the grand champion Muenster went for $1,000 per pound, and in 2009 it raised $19,700.
The Foreign Type Cheesemakers Association uses the money raised at the annual event to help community projects and local organizations. Last year, proceeds went toward Crimestoppers, the United Way and the Green County Historic Cheesemakers, among others.
A feta made by Steve Bulholzer of Klondike Cheese took the top bid this year from Quest Industrial, at $290 per pound for five pounds. Quest also took Buholzer's second lot for $100 per pound. Other feta brought $12 to $30 per pound.
Last year, 10 pounds of Steve Webster's Grand Champion Feta from Klondike Cheese went at $40 per pound.
Limburger made by Nathan Leopold of Chalet Cheese Cooperative brought in the second highest bidding at $240 per pound from Steinmann Stainless Fabrication. Colony Brands won the second round of bidding at $110 per pound, before prices fell to between $40 and $60 per pound. Last year, Limburger was the highest selling cheese at $55 to $200 per pound.
Faith Engineering, Inc. and Quest Industrial vied for two lots, six pounds each, of Adam Buholzer's Muenster from Klondike Cheese. Faith took the first lot for $90 per pound, and Quest took the second at $85. Last year, a first-place Muenster from Decatur Swiss Cheese brought $90 per pound for 5-pound pieces.
Brandon Olson's Muenster, the 2012 Grand Champion at the fair, from Decatur Swiss Cheese Co-op, brought $82.50 and $70 per pound, thanks to Brennan's Market and Mahlkuch Electric sharing the two 6-pound lots. Other Muenster brought $52.50 to $70 per pound.
Emmi-Roth Kase Swiss brought in $60 and $82.50 per pound; other Swiss sold for $37.50 to $57.50. Baby Swiss went for $42.50 to $50. In 2011 , first-place Swiss and Baby Swiss went for $100 to $105 per pound.
Dave Buholzer from Klondike sold his brick for $70 and $77.50 per pound; other brick took between $27.50 and $60.
