Changes continue as work moves on

Times photo: Brenda Steurer Monroe Clinic began preliminary construction, which includes the new clinic east side entrance. The north side lower-level entrance, where many patients enter the pediatrics and family practice departments, will be closed for several months. People can still enter the main entrance on the west side of the clinic for the next few weeks.
MONROE - People who go to the Monroe Clinic will notice a few changes as construction work began on the north side lower-level entrance Monday and continues on the building's east side.

The lower-level entrance on the clinic's north side is now closed and will remain that way until mid-November, said Steve Borowski, Monroe Clinic director of facility services. The north side entrance is used for the pediatrics and family practice departments.

Patients and visitors should use the clinic's west entrance until the north entrance opens later this year.

Signs have been posted to direct people to the clinic's main entrance. The signs will become more important when construction begins later this year for the clinic's addition.

Work began about three weeks ago on the clinic building's east side. Borowski said an entrance will be added on the east side for patients and visitors. A new entrance will be needed because the west entrance will close once ground is broken for the new addition. No date has been determined for the groundbreaking, Borowski said. However, he said it's expected to take place by the end of the year.

The clinic's 223,000-square-foot addition is expected to be completed in 2011, Borowski said.

The Monroe Clinic's building plans and landscape designs call for an $85 million northwest expansion project. The expansion is being financed with $65 million in tax-exempt bonds and $20 million in long-term cash reserves.

With the new addition, most hospital patient services will be moved to the northwest addition, and will be connected to the Monroe Clinic's west side.

The expansion will house fewer ICU beds, but more medical-surgical beds than the current hospital.

The Clinic will offer valet service at the main hospital and Clinic entrances, as well as shuttle service throughout the parking lots from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
