NEW GLARUS - The Swiss Center of North America will celebrate its grand opening between 1 and 4 p.m. today at its new location, 507 Durst Road in New Glarus.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

New Glarus, which has a long Swiss tradition, was chosen to be the home of Swiss Center in 1999. The center's goal is to document and archive the Swiss story in North America, as well as help strengthen ties between Switzerland and North America.

The center will house archives, books, papers and other items that can be used to tell the story of Swiss influence in North America.

New Glarus offers the most completed story of immigration from the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland, to New Glarus. The center will attract students, scientists and amateur genealogists interested in tracing their Swiss heritage or learning more about modern and ancient Swiss culture. More than 4,000 volumes documenting Swiss culture and history already have been donated to the Swiss Center.

The center received support from local, state and federal officials as well as the government of Switzerland and the Nestle Corp.

More information about the center is available at www.theswisscenter.com or by calling (608) 527-6565.
