Center offers tax help to seniors

MONROE - The Behring Senior Center is offering tax preparation assistance for low- to moderate-income individuals, and it appears more people are using the service.

Tax volunteers will be at the center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday until tax time on a first-come, first-serve basis.

People who want their taxes done must sign up at the front desk at the center when they enter the building. They will be given a number, and their taxes will be prepared after their number is called.

The volunteers are trained by the Internal Revenue Service.

Assistant director Jocelyn Kline said the tax preparers will help with simple and basic taxes.

People should bring all of their tax information with them when they come to the senior center. Homestead credit help is also available.

Those who can't attend the sessions at the senior center can call Jim Munro at 325-7233 to set up a home appointment.

The senior center has helped seniors and others with their taxes for 15 years, Kline said.

She didn't know the exact number of people who receive assistance from the tax volunteers, but she said the number of people seems to increase every year.

The center expects more people this year, due to the recent downturn in the economy, she added.
