MONROE - The census office is looking for local people to follow up on missing census forms.
"It is in Green and Lafayette Counties that we need the most help," said Rick Zynda, the recruiting manager at the Madison 2010 census office.
The Madison 2010 census office is hiring about 900 to 1,200 census takers for their ten county area.
"We like to hire people in the local area, because they know their way around and know the people in the area," he said.
Census takers will earn $13 per hour and receive 50 cents per mile for driving expenses. The jobs start after April 1 and run until June or July.
"The work schedule is flexible. They will go door-to-door, mostly weekends and evenings when people are home. But they set their own schedule, usually 20 to 40 hours a week," Zynda explained.
The job requires four days of paid training, which will be conducted in the area. Candidates must pass a 30-minute, written, multiple-choice test, which includes basic math, comprehension, following directions and map-reading questions.
Zynda said applicants are encouraged to take the practice test, available on the Web site, http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs.
Applicants must be 18 years old and a United States citizen or possess verification that they are allowed to work in the country.
The number of people to be hired is dependent upon the number of census forms that are not returned, Zynda said.
If you live in Green or Lafayette counties and would like to apply for one of the 2010 Census jobs, call the Madison office at (608) 327-5620, or visit their Web site.
