MONROE - Fireworks and a Salute to America Sky Concert will be the highlights of the day when Monroe's Park and Recreation Department hosts the city's Fourth of July Celebration Friday at Twining Park.
Monroe City Band fires up the evening with a free concert at 8 p.m. and fireworks light up the sky at 9:30 p.m., sponsored by Wisconsin Bank and Trust.
The annual event includes a full day of activities. The petting zoo, sponsored by the Lion's Club, is back, along with free horse and wagon ride with Clinton Zettle, sponsored by Kiwanis. The wagon tours have been a popular attraction at the Fourth of July celebrations, but this is the last year Zettle will be guiding the tours, according to Marge Klinzing, director of the Monroe's Recreation Department. The department hopes to find another, similar type of ride next year.
More than a dozen children's carnival games, with face painting and tattoos are sponsored by local community organizations and businesses, will be offered. Klinzing said the games have some new themes again.
Coed slowpitch, coed volleyball and four-on-four soccer tournaments will be held at Twining Park and YMCA throughout the day. Food, including rib eye, barbecue pork, roast beef and cheese sandwiches; hot dogs; brats; nachos; and pizza will be available, along with creme puffs, ice cream, cotton candy and snow cones.
