"Nick Bieri, 1849-1933 - Wolf Hunter" is inscribed on this tombstone in Union Cemetery on Loveland Road, Washington Township. Nick Bieri, a Swiss immigrant, standing behind his brother Fred, was one of Monticello's more colorful characters. He lived for many years with his brother in Washington Township and supported himself by roaming the countryside hunting wolves and foxes before collecting the state and county bounty money. He also harvested and sold honey from bee trees in the local woods. It is said that Bieri knew every bee tree within a radius of 30 miles of his home, which at one time was a well-furnished and equipped cave. (Photo supplied by the Monticello Historical Society)
