Celebrating Our Past: Green County Historical Society
38046a.jpg
Photo supplied by the Green County Historical Society This photo, looking south on the west side of the Square, was taken about 1940 from the roof or top floor of the Montgomery Ward Store, which was located where Monroe Medical Equipment is currently located. Signs can be seen for Ford Hopkins Drug Store, Meythaler Brothers Grocery Store, Monroe Bakery, JC Penney Company, The Toggery Shop, Rottlers Variety Store, the Hotel Eugene and its coffee shop. The signs above the door of Baumgartner Cheese Supply say Golden Glow Beer and Cheese Store. The high school, built in 1916 and its recent addition to the west, and the Lincoln Park water tower, can be seen in the distance. More aerial and birds eye view photos are to be included in the Monroe Area Pictorial History, which should be out within two years. If you have photos that might be copied for inclusion, contact Matt Figi at 325-6503 or mfigi48@tds.net.
