NEW GLARUS - Get ready to speak a little Swiss, when Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus hosts der Heimatabend, a folkloric evening, on April 15.
Ein heimatabend literally means a home evening, though the Swiss Center event is about anything but staying in.
"It's a party to celebrate your culture," said Beth Zubuchen, President and CEO of the Swiss Center of North America.
The guest of honor for the evening is Peter Schibli, director and national coordinator of Swissinfo, a multimedia, multi-lingual news and information platform produced by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. A graduate of the University of Berne, Schibli has worked as a journalist since 1981 and served as a correspondent in Germany and the United States.
Swissinfo.ch reports on Switzerland and provides a Swiss perspective on international events. Top priority is given to in-depth information on politics, the economy, the arts, science, education and tourism. Switzerland's international political, economic and cultural relations are other key points of focus.
But der Heimatabend in New Glarus promises to be about much more than the news.
"(Schibli) is a true historian of Bern (the Swiss capital) and does walking historical tours as well as mystery walking tours of Bern and other places," Zurbuchen said.
Schibli is scheduling a stop in Monroe on April 19, to tour the downtown historic Square, Historical Cheesemaking Center and Baumgartner's. He will dine with Mayor Bill Ross and discuss the possibilities of pairing a Swiss town with Monroe as sister cities.
"The big picture of all this is to strengthen (the relationships of) those of us with Swiss heritage back to those in Switzerland," Zurbuchen said.
Schibli will be in the United States during April, visiting also Washington, D. C. and Phoenix, and is writing about his journey at myjourneywest.wordpress.com.
