MONROE - Plans for a three-day trial by jury are moving forward for a 33-year-old man charged with repeated sexual assault of two young girls at homes in Monroe and Brodhead.
Norberto Santiago Castellanos appeared Tuesday, June 25 in Green County Circuit Court. An in-patient evaluation at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison during the past year found him competent to stand trial.
The charges stem from allegations that Santiago Castellanos had vaginal and anal sex with two girls younger than 10 beginning in October 2010 and continuing through April 2012. He faces two Class A felony counts of repeated sexual assault of the same child and a Class I felony count of exposing a child to harmful material.
Prosecutor Jeffrey Kohl and public defender Frank Medina discussed their plans for the trial, set to begin July 31. They expect witnesses to include the two girls and an officer with the Brodhead Police Department. Two Spanish-English interpreters will also be requested for the trial.
Medina is seeking to suppress recorded statements his client made to law enforcement. A hearing for the judge to rule on this motion is set for July 11. The attorneys are also ordered to have jury instructions finished by then.
