SOUTH BELOIT, ILL. - An Albany man confessed that he made up a story about being carjacked at gunpoint in South Beloit, Ill. early Tuesday, according to police.

Michael A. Hren, 52, told Dane County Sheriff's Department deputies at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday that earlier in the morning, two black men, armed with guns, carjacked his semi truck and trailer at the Flying J Travel Plaza in South Beloit. He said the two men drove the truck and trailer into Dane County and told him to get out of the truck in Windsor, north of Madison.

The two men then drove away, he said.

The Dane County Sheriff's Department interviewed Hren and then brought him to the South Beloit Police Department, according to Adam Truman, South Beloit Interim Police Chief.

While South Beloit police officers were interviewing him about the incident, Hren admitted he made up the story to get publicity.

Truman said Hren was charged with filing a false police report, a Class 4 felony. He faces up to $10,000 in fines and more than one year in jail if convicted.
