DARLINGTON - A 3-year-old Darlington boy was struck and killed by a car near his home at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Benjamin S. Lapp, son of Andrew and Naomi Lapp, was crossing County Highway F when he was hit by a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Douglas Kelly, 36, Darlington.
Lafayette County Chief Deputy John Reichling said Kelly's vehicle was westbound on County F about 2.5 miles north of Darlington in Willow Springs township.
Lapp had been helping his brother feed cattle across the road, Reichling said.
"When they were finished he ran across the road," Reichling said.
Reichling said Kelly tried to avoid the boy, but couldn't.
Lapp was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas.
Reichling said Kelly was wearing his seatbelt and it doesn't appear that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The Darlington Fire Department and Rural Medical Ambulance assisted at the scene.
