MONROE - They're lined up and ready for the ballot in April.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, to turn in their nomination papers for the 2014 Spring Election, and there will be no need for a city primary in February, according to Monroe City Clerk Carol Stamm Tuesday, Jan. 7.

But there will be choices for voters in April, particularly for mayor and for Ward 3 alderman.

Incumbent Mayor Bill Ross will aim for his third term in a row, and his challenger is a previous challenger for mayor, Tyler Schultz, the current Ward 5 alderman. Schultz ran against Ross in 2010.

Schultz turned in his non-candidacy papers for Ward 5, saying he didn't think it was right to run for both positions at the same time.

Incumbent Ward 3 Alderman Michael Boyce also is focusing on a third term and facing a previous challenger. Larry Christopher III ran as a write-in candidate against Boyce in 2012; this year his name will be printed on the ballot. Boyce won his seat with 56 percent of the votes in 2012.

Ward 5 voters will see a familiar name back on the ballot. Charles Koch will be running to fill Schultz's empty seat. Schultz took 52 percent of the votes in Ward 5, when he beat out Koch in 2012.

Ward 9 will not see any names on the ballot. Alderman Charles Schuringa said he is hanging up his hat and declared his non-candidacy.

Ward 4 seat normally would not be coming up for a vote this year, but Jeff Newcomer is an appointed alderman. He is officially campaigning for the seat this time around.

Other incumbents, and unchallenged, are Tom Miller, back on the ballot for Ward 1, and Louis Armstrong for Ward 7.
