What are the top issues facing this district/board and how would you work to resolve them?

I believe our school board deals primarily with monetary issues. Watching state support move up or down, tracking income and expenses, funding issues and allocation are the substantive subjects. Next to money and money management would be student achievement.

Since I believe our school board wrestles with monetary issues and student achievement as the two most fluid issues in any biennium, I think we need to accentuate our resources that can make treating these issues easier. One, we are a community. We are not 40 percent retired, 20 percent business, 30 percent employed and 10 percent invisible. We must look at ourselves having responsibility for all. No family is absolved from caring about the least of us and all families have a primary responsibility to lift their child and as well as all others. In a Community committed to the graduation of each student with an education and an understanding of how to begin their adult life, our school board has great confidence in making decisions that focus on success vs. civic criticism.

Student achievement in 2014 is being challenged in ways the majority of our community does not understand. Therefore, we need a means of bringing to our citizens the world as it is for our graduates so their support can be counted on. Since a useable, reliable and employable education are the minimum we want our children to enter adulthood with, we may have to be willing to admit we need change. Perhaps it is technical class-sharing with 2-year community colleges, six-year high schools, cogent economic s and monetary skills for our high school students. I know these young adults need to enter the world knowing how to make safe and good decisions for themselves.



What are the other key issues facing the district/board, and how would you work to resolve them?

I believe in Common Core standards as a minimum beginning. If we asked any student or parent, "Please raise your hand if you would like to transfer to a school in any other state where your education is well behind everyone?" No one raises their hand.

Moving from 180 days to 160 days is insane. Perhaps to people who look only at money it may be a solution. Asking children to concentrate in a school day that is longer (to make up for the hours lost from 20 days reduced) is like asking any of us to make fewer mistakes in the last two hours of strenuous concentration. Giving 20 days extra off in the summer is not going to help learning retention and consistency. This is a prescription for failure.

Questions loom about how to keep top-notch educators to teach our most importance resource. Will there be merit pay and benefits planning? Are our teachers going to retire with money in an account? Can this school district be a community and pull together for student excellence? Each of these issues I believe I can manage and contribute value to the board on.



Why are you the best candidate for this office?

My core understandings are: Treat every person the way you would want to be treated. Leave no one behind, ever. No one ever raised their hand and said, "Sure, I don't mind losing ..."
