BROWNTOWN - A Browntown family will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving in their new home.
Terry and Marie Svendsen, along with their two children and Marie's mother, Linda, have been selected to live in a Habitat for Humanity home.
In March, Marie saw information about a new Habitat home being planned for Browntown. She decided she would apply. After the interview process, the family was told they were selected.
The Svendsens are looking forward to having more room.
The couple moved into their rental home about 10 years ago when their daughter, Cassandra, was 3. Marie said the couple found out she was expecting another baby the day after they moved into their home.
Their two-bedroom house soon became too small for the family.
"When we moved in we knew it was only a two-bedroom home but it seemed plenty big for the three of us," Terry said.
When their son Joshua, 9, was little, he and his sister had to share a room but before long they needed their own space.
Four years ago, Linda moved in with the family for health reasons.
"We weren't sure how to make it work but we knew that we needed to find a way to make it work," Marie said.
The family wanted to move to a larger home but Terry lost his job at Advance Transformer a few years ago. He's worked at Wisconsin Cheese Corporation for the past three years.
Marie and Linda also had health problems that made a move to a large home difficult. Their illnesses were followed by an accident last year that kept Terry off work for four weeks.
Marie works at Swiss Colony from July through December.
The kids are excited at the thought of their own rooms. Joshua already plans to put a sign on his door that says "No Sisters Allowed, Please."
The family will be required to put in 500 hours of work helping Habitat volunteers build the home.
Groundbreaking is planned for July.
People interested in helping build the home can call 325-4024. Callers should leave a name, address and phone number to be added to the volunteer list.
People who want to make a monetary contribution can send a check to Green County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 398, Monroe, WI 53566.
