MONROE - A Brodhead man was sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation on charges relating to the possession of child pornography.

Ahreen M. Spellman, 34, pleaded no contest to a Class I felony count of possessing a recording of a nude person without that person's consent and to two misdemeanor counts of publishing a private representation of a person without that person's consent.

Four Class D felony counts of possession of child pornography were dismissed.

Spellman was sentenced to two years of probation, with 180 days of conditional jail time. In addition, Spellman will have to register as a sex offender for two years and undergo additional supervision for three years.

Green County Circuit Judge Thomas Vale said Spellman's probation will not permit him to have unsupervised contact with minors, including his own daughter.

"You need to understand that a child, someone's child, has been victimized," Vale said.

Spellman was charged in 2015 after Department of Justice investigators discovered that child porn videos had been downloaded to a laptop whose IP address traced to Spellman's residence. Several videos were found on his laptop depicting prepubescent girls engaged in sexual acts with adult men and young boys.

Spellman's attorney, Stephen Mays, said that part of the reason for Spellman's relatively light sentence is because of his low risk of recidivism.

Spellman has no prior criminal record, Mays said, which means he is unlikely to re-offend. Furthermore, an extended prison sentence would not serve to give Spellman the treatment he needs.

Mays said Spellman has already completed some sex offender therapy but still has much more to go through.

Spellman's 180-day conditional jail sentence will begin on July 1.
