ROCK COUNTY — A Brodhead man was arrested for his fifth drunk driving offense after a deputy came across a crashed vehicle at about 10:15 p.m. Aug. 15 a few miles west of Beloit, according to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened at Wisconsin 81 and South County H in the Town of Newark. The driver had lost control while westbound and negotiating a sweeping curve to the left, crashing into the ditch.
Witnesses told the deputy the lone male occupant of the vehicle ran into a nearby wood line.
The deputy located 40-year-old Travis L. Hawkins “hiding in some foliage” nearby. Hawkins reportedly showed signs of impairment and admitted he’d been drinking alcohol prior to driving.
Hawkins was arrested on a fifth-offense charge of operating while intoxicated, a felony. He was jailed pending his initial appearance in Rock County Circuit Court.
Court records show Hawkins has pending fourth-offense charges of operating with a restricted controlled substance and with a prohibited blood-alcohol concentration from 2019 in Green County.
