BRODHEAD - The Brodhead Police Department cited 26 drivers Monday as it conducted its third pedestrian safety enforcement deployment in three months.
The deployment was part of an ongoing program to raise awareness of pedestrian safety laws.
Brodhead Police Chief Chris Hughes said in a news release that it was imperative to hold another deployment now that school is in session and more pedestrians will be out.
Like the previous two deployments, the last of which took place Aug. 17, an officer in bright civilian clothes repeatedly crossed the roadway using a crosswalk at the intersection of 1st Center Avenue and 21st Street. Unlike the previous two deployments, where officers only issued warnings to violators, drivers who violated safety laws were issued traffic citations.
Police cited 26 drivers, a decrease from the 30 drivers stopped during the deployment in August.
Twenty-three of the citations were issued for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, while the remainder were for illegally passing a motorist who had yielded for a pedestrian. One driver was also cited for driving with a suspended license, without vehicle insurance and a seatbelt violation.
Officers also rewarded 10 drivers who complied with the law by mailing them coupons for a free sandwich at Subway.
Drivers are required by state law to yield to any pedestrian who has entered a crosswalk and are not permitted to proceed until all pedestrians have exited the crosswalk.
