Broadband expansion continues in county

DARLINGTON - For rural America, inadequate access to internet poses problems for using technologies. Lafayette County Development Corporation has been working with service providers to address issues including service interruptions and unreliable speeds for community members.

The LDC has submitted grant applications twice with another application due in January. Limited availability of funds has made the application process competitive, but Lafayette County received one grant to expand broadband with the service provider ComElec.

ComElec has expanded its service in Lafayette County, with new towers located in Wiota and Willow Springs, as well as with its tallest tower on the Platteville Mound. The company has continued to upgrade its current towers to provide high-speed wireless internet access to hundreds of customers in Lafayette County. ComElec has more than 70 wireless sites in Southwest Wisconsin and Iowa and has incorporated fiber internet into areas where wireless does not provide adequate access to residents.

Another service provider that is helping Lafayette County get connected is Bug Tussel Wireless. Bug Tussel has towers in Belmont, Darlington, Blanchardville and Browntown. By the end of the year, four more towers will be ready in Gratiot, Benton, Lamont and north of Belmont. Bug Tussel will be offering training courses to residents on how to use computers and the internet.
