MONROE - Mark Vahlsing no longer is the City of Monroe's administrator.

In a news release brought to the Times office Wednesday afternoon by Mayor Ron Marsh, the city and Vahlsing "announced today that his employment as Monroe's City Administrator would end effective May 14, 2008."

According to the news release, the Monroe City Council in its special meeting Tuesday night approved five months of severance pay for Vahlsing as provided for in his employment agreement with the city.

Vahlsing was the subject of a discrimination complaint filed May 1 by a former employee. Janelle Bittner, the city's confidential administrative assistant from May 21, 2007, to April 2, 2008, alleged she was forced to quit by Vahlsing because she refused his sexual advances and because she complained to a manager about sexual harassment.

"The council has made no finding there has been any violation of city policies by any City employee," the news release said. "Vahlsing denies he has violated any City policies, and all of the allegations of a recently filed discrimination complaint by a former employee.

"The City of Monroe, with Vahlsing's cooperation, will continue to defend the discrimination complaint filed by the former employee."

Marsh said he would not have any further comment.

Vahlsing began as Monroe's first city administrator in April 2006.
