The Monroe softball team has advanced to the state final of the Division 2 tournament after defeating Port Washington, 2-1, in a semifinal game Friday evening at the UW-Madison's Goodman Field.
The Cheesemakers (20-9) rallied with a two-run fifth inning on a run-scoring triple by Paisley Bennett and an RBI-single by Gwen Sutter. Monroe pitcher Meghan Roberts gave up one run in the first inning, then shut down Port Washington (18-8) the rest of the way.
Monroe will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal, between Altoona (21-5) and Luxemburg-Casco (16-12) in Saturday's state title game, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
