FAYETTE TOWNSHIP – A 19-year-old Stoughton man lost his life Saturday afternoon at the Department of Natural Resources Shooting Range, according to a press release from Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill.
Gill released the name of the man, Noah Ivan Garrett, early Sunday morning and said it appears he died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gill said the range was open to the public at the time of the shooting.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office took in multiple 911 calls around 2:58 p.m. Aug. 18 with conflicting information, according to the release, but it was determined that a male had suffered a gunshot wound at the shooting range, 9565 County F, Fayette Township.
Wisconsin DNR staff from Yellowstone Lake responded, along with Darlington Area EMS, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Deputies and Darlington Police.
Med Flight from UW-Madison also responded to the intersection of County F and County G. According to the release, lifesaving measures were taken, but Garrett died as a result of the gunshot wound.
Green County EMS, Darlington Fire and the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office also responded.
According to the DNR website, the Yellowstone Wildlife Area Shooting Range is owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and is managed in cooperation with the Fayette Sportsman’s Club. The shooting range is open daily each week throughout the year, except Tuesdays when the range is closed for use by state and local law enforcement.
