MONROE - The run for top spot at City Hall has begun.
Both Mayor Bill Ross and Michael Boyce, alderman for Ward 3, have registered their campaigns, indicating their intentions to run for mayor of Monroe this spring.
Boyce also registered his campaign statement of intent to run for re-election as alderman of Ward 3.
City Clerk Carol Stamm said Boyce can run for both positions simultaneously. If he wins both elections, he must choose only one position to fill.
Ward 7, encompassing the downtown business district, could possibly see a run-off prior to the April election, if the council chooses to schedule one. As of late Wednesday afternoon, four men have registered to run for that council seat: Incumbent Thurston Hanson; Louis Armstrong, who ran against Hanson in 2010; Rob McCarthy; and Tony Gratz.
Tyler Schultz, currently holding the Ward 10 seat on the council, registered to run for alderman of Ward 5, a position now held by Charles Koch. Ward 10 will disappear after April 2013 because of redistricting. If Schultz wins the Ward 5 position in April, Ward 10 will disappear when he takes his new office. If he loses, Schultz can serve out his remaining year as Ward 10 alderman.
Thursday, Dec. 1 was the first day potential candidates could register to run. Each candidate must collect a required number of signatures and file the papers with the city clerk by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3.
City elections for mayor and aldermen of odd-numbered wards will be held April 3, 2012. Elections will be run according to the new district boundaries.
Common Council seats up for election in April are currently held by Neal Hunter, Ward 1; Boyce, Ward 3; Koch, Ward 5; Hanson, Ward 7; and Chris Beer, Ward 9.
Beer will not be able to run for re-election, because redistricting places her in Ward 6. Alderman Jan Lefevre currently lives and serves in new Ward 6; although she was elected in old Ward 4 in 2011. Beer won her seat in Ward 9 last April, to finish a 2-year term vacated by Mike Rivers.
New ward boundaries leave Ward 9, on Monroe's west side, empty on the Common Council.
Registration for non-candidacy must be filed with the city clerk by noon Friday, Dec. 23. City hall is closing early Dec. 23 for the Christmas holiday.
