MONROE - A four-year-old Monroe boy, Max Borgmann, will be an honorary chairman for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Green County this year.

"This year's relay is titled Everyone Deserves Another Birthday, and Max certainly deserves another birthday," said Dee Miller of the Green County Relay for Life Committee.

The committee is trying to get schools more involved this year, with one program already underway.

"All the schools in Green County will be getting coloring pages for grade school students to color, which will be on display at the relay," Miller said.

Last year the relay brought 32 teams to the race track behind Monroe High School. Max Borgmann has been coming for two years.

Miller said a lot of people have told her they would sign up a team if they knew how, and on Thursday evening, March 4, they might be able to get all the information and help that they need.

Event volunteers and participants are gathering from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Monroe Clinic's Founders Hall, as The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Green County will officially get underway with a kickoff rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year.

Volunteers will be on hand to help teams get started.

The rally will be the first opportunity to register a team for the Green County Relay for Life, to be held Friday, June 25, and through the night to June 26.

Featured rally speakers from the community include Borgman's grandmother Mona Borgmann and others who have benefited from the funds raised through the Relay for Life. The rally will also honor cancer survivors.

"It's a come-and-go event," Miller said.

Teams looking for help getting started may also contact JoAnn Steuri at 728-2980, call 1-800-227-2345, or visit www.RelayForLife.org.

This year, Relay for Life will take place in nearly 5,100 communities in the United States and 20 other countries and will raise funds to support the society's mission.
