MONROE - Local bowling alley Leisure Lanes is offering free games this week during spring break and again all summer to kids and teens as part of a nationwide effort to get children exercising and to build interest in the sport.

Anyone 18 and under can bowl two games free from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parents need not be present for kids to bowl, though Leisure Lanes is offering discounts to parents who want to bowl as a family.

To sign up, go to kidsbowlfree.com/leisure.

The bowling alley at 2308 6th Ave. isn't getting reimbursed for participating in "Kids Bowl Free," according to manager Dan Goepfert. This is the second year Leisure Lanes has taken part in the five-year-old program.

"It definitely gets interest up," Goepfert said.

Jill Leuzinger brought her three children Monday to bowl a couple of games and take advantage of the deal. She kept score for Logan, 11, Carson, 9, and Lindsay, 6 ("and a half," as the girl pointed out).

Bowling is just one way Leuzinger is keeping her kids occupied while they're on spring break, she said. Other activities she's planned this week include dying Easter eggs, spring shopping and "dugutting rooms" in preparation for a summer yard sale.

Since the program started in 2008, Kids Bowl Free reports that more than 5.2 million kids have participated at alleys across the U.S. and Canada. It's organized by Bowling Business Builders International, an industry marketing firm.

Kids Bowl Free is also offering 500 $200 grants to elementary and middle school teachers for classroom supplies. Interested teachers can sign up at kidsbowlfree.com/grants. Grants will be awarded monthly through October.
