Board honors students for financial knowledge

MONROE - Six Monroe High School business students were honored at the Monroe School Board meeting Monday after placing in the top 20 percent of the 2011 National Financial Capability Challenge.

The Challenge is an online 40-question literacy quiz designed to increase financial knowledge.

The quiz focuses on investments, savings, budgets and other financial topics. The six Monroe students who scored in the top 20 percent include Austin Burandt, Sofia Larraga, Jeremy Line, Mitch Marty, Sean Nack and James White.

Nack was one of 524 students out of 84,000 to earn a perfect score.

He was one of 42 students across the state to earn a perfect score. The six Monroe students averaged an 88 percent on the quiz and the national average was 69 percent.

Students who placed in the top 10 percent nationwide will be entered into a drawing to receive one of the 20 $1,000 scholarships.

In other action, the board on Monday:

n Received a letter from Gov. Scott Walker congratulating the high school for the increased opportunities and performances on Advanced Placement Exams.

n Approved the hiring of Mindy Mulryan-Gehin as a cross-categorical, special education teacher at Monroe Middle School.
