MONROE - The Monroe school board Monday accepted the resignation of Eric Huinker, Parkside Elementary School principal.

No reasons were given in Huinker's two-sentence resignation letter to Superintendent Larry Brown and the school board. The letter was dated and marked as received by the district June 29. The resignation was effective June 30.

Huinker was no longer the acting Parkside principal as of the first week of June, which was the last week school was in session. At the time, Brown said it was a personnel issue and would not comment any further on why Huinker was no longer acting as principal.

Brown said the district will post the position today and in two weeks will select a committee to interview candidates to replace Huinker. The district will accept applications from both inside and outside the district, he said.

Huinker was hired by the district in 2009 to replace long-time principal Jim Brunette, who retired in June 2009. Huinker last worked in Norway, Iowa. Huinker had two more years left on his contract.

Until a new principal is selected, Beth Ableman-Bernet will continue as acting principal. Ableman-Bernet has been acting principal since the first week of June. Over the past two decades, Ableman-Bernet has held a variety of positions in the district, including teaching special education, fourth and sixth grades and Title I math. Last summer she was named dean of students/lead teacher for Monroe's virtual school.
